Dental implants
An implant replaces the root of a lost tooth. A crown is fixed on top, and it looks and works like your own tooth — without grinding down the neighbouring teeth.
When you need it
- A tooth has been removed or can't be saved
- You don't want neighbouring teeth ground down for a bridge
- You need support for a denture when several teeth are missing
How the treatment works
- 1
Consultation and X-ray
The dentist examines your mouth, checks the bone on an X-ray or CT scan, suggests an implant system and gives you the full cost.
- 2
Placing the implant
Under local anaesthesia, a titanium implant is placed in the bone. This usually takes 30–60 minutes per implant.
- 3
Healing
Over 3–6 months the implant fuses with the bone. If the gap is visible, a temporary tooth can be fitted for this time.
- 4
Healing cap
A healing cap is fitted for 1–2 weeks so the gum takes the right shape around the future crown.
- 5
Abutment and crown
An abutment — a connector — is attached to the implant, and a crown matched to the colour of your teeth is fixed on it.
If there isn't enough bone
A sinus lift or bone grafting may be needed before the implant — the dentist will tell you at the consultation.
How long it takes
From placing the implant to the crown usually takes 3–7 months.
After the procedure
- For the first few days — soft, not hot food, chew on the other side
- Smoking slows implant healing
- Brush as usual, gently around the implant
- Check-up every 6 months
